An eye condition that causes distant objects to be out of focus

Short-sightedness explained

In these toggles you will find everything you need to know

Short-sightedness incidence / prevalence

Short-sightedness, also known as myopia, is very common, with approximately 40% of the adult population diagnosed with the condition.

If you are short-sighted you:

  • Have difficulty seeing objects in the distance with less of a problem seeing objects that are near.
  • Associate with a minus (-) prescription

Short-sightedness causes

Short-sightedness occurs during development and can be inherited if there is a family history of the condition.

Short-sighted eyes tend to be larger in comparison to long-sighted eyes.

There is evidence to suggest that excessive near vision use in childhood can cause short-sightedness.

Short-sightedness can exist in conjunction with astigmatism.

Short-sightedness diagnosis and examination process

We can diagnose short-sightedness with a detailed eye examination.

Short-sightedness treatments

Laser eye surgery is an ideal treatment for short-sightedness. Further investigations are required to determine which type of laser procedure is most appropriate for your eyes.

If you are not suitable or do not want to have laser treatment, other options such as lens replacement surgery are available.

The procedure was so quick and the people performing it – in particular the surgeon, put me at ease – I wasn’t at all apprehensive. The next day my vision was perfect and I have had better than 20|20 vision ever since. I would recommend this to anyone, best thing I ever did.
