Short-sightedness explained

In these toggles you will find everything you need to know

Short-sightedness, also known as myopia, is very common, with approximately 40% of the adult population diagnosed with the condition.

If you are short-sighted you:

  • Have difficulty seeing objects in the distance with less of a problem seeing objects that are near.
  • Associate with a minus (-) prescription
Short-sightedness occurs during development and can be inherited if there is a family history of the condition.

Short-sighted eyes tend to be larger in comparison to long-sighted eyes.

There is evidence to suggest that excessive near vision use in childhood can cause short-sightedness.

Short-sightedness can exist in conjunction with astigmatism.

We can diagnose short-sightedness with a detailed eye examination.
Laser eye surgery is an ideal treatment for short-sightedness. Further investigations are required to determine which type of laser procedure is most appropriate for your eyes.

If you are not suitable or do not want to have laser treatment, other options such as lens replacement surgery are available.

Am I suitable for laser eye surgery?

Generally speaking, most people are suitable, but a full assessment and evaluation are necessary to give a definite answer.

My prescription for glasses is still changing, can I still have laser eye surgery?

You should have a stable prescription for a 1-2 years before considering laser eye surgery.

If I am not suitable for laser eye surgery, are there other options available?

Yes. Of course, this is dependant on several factors which we can discuss at the consultation.

The procedure was so quick and the people performing it – in particular the surgeon, put me at ease – I wasn’t at all apprehensive. The next day my vision was perfect and I have had better than 20|20 vision ever since. I would recommend this to anyone, best thing I ever did.

Hi, I had Lasek eye surgery 3 weeks ago. Dr Manek did the procedure, he put me at ease and chatted throughout the surgery to keep my mind off the surgery. My vision is perfect now! I’m really happy I went through with the surgery, I would recommend it to anyone thinking about getting it done!
